Portugal handball federation was founded on
1 May 1938, through an initiative of the Regional Federations
of Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra. This sport was introduced by
Armando Tschopp, responsible for the publications of the Handball
rules in the Newspaper “Sports” in November 1929.
Having developed the initial steps, the Regional Federations
of Lisbon and Porto organised the first official competitions
in 1932, still played with 11 players, as handball of 7 players
would only begin later on, in 1949. For the history pages,
remain the organisation of the Porto-Lisbon match in 1934
and the entry of the Portuguese Federation as member founder
of the International Handball Federation in 1946.
Today, the reality is very different. Being the Handball Federation
of Portugal (HFP) the highest entity in handball, we can visualise
a modernisation of the associative organisation, with the
creation of Enterprises in the World of Sport (i.e. Andebol
2003 SA, And Marketing SA, And Form SA), the re-organisation
of the inter-regional relations with the Regional Federations,
the global computerised system of the handball structure and
the strong bet on 4 vectors: talent detection, handball of
5, beach handball and women’s handball.
Nobody doubts that handball is on top and has become a reference
both at national and international levels. Numbers say it
all: more than 25 000 athletes (77% of these are youngsters)
and sporting agents, the regular practice of the sport from
north to south of the country and in the Island of Madeira,
handball is sport number one among women.
The permanent presence of the nation at the European and World
Championships, with world class players and elite referees
has indeed attracted more and more public, increased audiences,
namely with more and more broadcasting hours every time.
This appereance on the 14. Youth WC in Macedonia will be the
first for the youth national team of Portugal.
