History of Polish handball began
in 1918. It is believed that the soldiers from the Polish
Legions detainedn in a German camp in Szcypiorno near Kalisz
learned the rules of the game from the German guards. The
game had been knowh in Poland as "szcypiorniak",
after the neam of the camp, till 1950.
In 1927 handball was recognized by the Polish Association
of Sport games, and Poland was acceptedan an IHF member in
Berlin in 1928. The first Polish championships with 11 teams
was held in 1930.
Handball's dynamic development began bu the end of 1940s.
The First state league of 11 player teams was created in 1948.
In the middle of 1950s, there was a significant increase of
interest in the seven player team handball. In the 1958, Polish
man national team was fifth on the WC.
The biggest success of the women handball was winning the
fifth place on the WC hel in Yugoslavia in 1973. The man team
was 10th on the Olympic games in Munich 1972. Two years later,
man National team was fourth on the WC, and in 1975 on the
Olympic games in Montreal, Poland was third.
At the Olympic games in Moscow 1980, man team was seventh,
and two years later, they woin the bronze medal on WC hel
in Germany. Also, Polish national men qualify to the EC in
Sweden in 2001. Poland has won the 10th place in WC in Portugal
this year.
The women youth team has played on five WC, an the biggest
success was winning the third place in Korea 1985. Onn the
other WC's, Poland won fifth place (Romania 1977), seventh
place (France 1983), 13th (Denmark 1987), and eighth place
in Bulgaria 1993.
