The Norwegian Handball Federation (NHF) is
primarily a youth movement. The Federation has about 100.000
members of which about 75.000 are active players.
Of these, around 70 percent are under 17 years old and 70%
percent are also female. The Federation lists 815 member clubs.
In Norway, women have dominated handball since the sport's
very beginning. The "handball - girls "will rank
among the most popular sports personalities in Norway. Almost
1,5 million Norwegians watched the WCh. 1999 finale in Lillehammer
and this in a country of only 4,5 million inhabitants. And
as a matter of interest, the Board of The Norwegian Handball
Federation is composed of equal numbers men and women, which
says something about the strong position held by handball
as a sport for woman.
The basis of the national team's success is the 815 clubs
scattered throughout the nation. The live-blod of the athletics
movement in Norway, is the great number of volunteers who
do a tremendous job as board and committee members and as
club coaches. These voluntary workers, combined with supportive
professional expertise, have contributed tremendously to the
positive development of Norwegian handball.
The rankings of the Norwegian national team on the previous
